Several hundred Lady Health Workers (LHWs), government employees and volunteers on Thursday took part in the demonstrations held at Chowk Nawan Shehr in protest against armed attacks on members of anti-polio campaign teams in different parts of the country over the past two days. They condemned attacks on the people engaged in a campaign for a noble cause and demanded the government to take immediate measures to ensure their safety and security.

The demo was led by Pakistan National Programme Health Workers Association (PNHWA) Chairperson Sajida Hameed, President Rukhsana Anwar, Nargis Wazir Khan, Nasreen Akhtar, Saira Naqvi and Aatika Hamid. They vowed to continue drive against polio to make Pakistan a polio-free country and they would not bow down before the terrorists.

They demanded to arrest attackers and Rs 2 million compensation for each deceased victim, saying that announcement for payment of Rs 0.5 million to the deceased families was not sufficient. They also called for the arrest of a religious party activist who, they claimed, threatened a lady health worker with dire consequences if she tried to enter his home for administering polio drops to his children.

They said Adeela and Shehla -two volunteers- were doing the follow-up anti-polio campaign on Thursday in New Multan area, when all of sudden, two armed men reached and shot fired in the air to harass them. Later they made off. EDO (Health) Dr Iftikhar Qureshi reached at site and they also informed the CPO Multan and they said that stern action would be taken against the culprits.
